Academy of Urban Learning (AUL) was founded by the the Jared Polis Foundation and Urban Peak Denver in the fall 2005. Both organizations recognized the need for a small public charter high school in Denver that would focus on providing essential wraparound services to youth who are homeless, experiencing unstable living conditions or have other at-risk factors. The Jared Polis Foundation and Urban Peak Denver understood the importance of staff and students knowing each other well and creating a caring, academic environment that pushes each student to succeed.

KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy’s mission is to help all students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond.
KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy (KSPA) is an academically rigorous, college preparatory public school for at-risk students in grades five through eight. KSPA requires students and parents to sign a written contract that specifies attendance from 7:25 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, four hours on Saturdays, and one month each summer. The contract obligates parents to reinforce students' commitments, ensure attendance, and help with two to three hours of homework each evening.
At KSPA, we make home visits to provide homework assistance and help teach parents methods of academic support. Provide transportation to and from school for those students who do not have transportation. Teachers are on call 24-hours, providing students with home phone, cellular, and respond to a toll-free 1-800 number for student homework questions and emergencies.
At KSPA, we believe that a quality education is based upon 1) MORE TIME for students in the classroom daily, weekly, and yearly; 2) CHOICE AND COMMITMENT to the school on the part of teachers, parents, and students alike; 3) POWER TO LEAD for the school leader who needs to have control over personnel and budget; 4) HIGH EXPECTATIONS for student academic achievement and conduct regardless of their backgrounds; and 5) FOCUS ON RESULTS as the manner to assess student, teacher, administrator, and overall school performance.

P.S.1 serves a diverse student body of 6th through 12th graders in an innovative school building in downtown Denver. Guiding the school is its mission that states, “P.S.1 is a small, inclusive learning community where a diverse student body successfully prepares for post-secondary education, skilled employment and positive contributions to the world. At P.S.1, students build strong relationships, engage in relevant learning experiences and reach academic excellence.”
P.S.1 serves approximately 330 students who live in Denver and the surrounding area. In this small school environment, each student has an “advisor” who supports the student’s academic, social and emotional growth. Students’ classes focus on raising academic skills, planning for the future and contributing positively to their communities. Student progress is demonstrated not only through assessments in class, but also through Personal Learning Plans, Portfolios, and Presentations of Learning.
