“Charter Schools ROCK!”

2011 Colorado Charter Schools Rally

Governor O'Brien (Photo Credit: Lester Frye)“Charter Schools Matter” was chanted by over 600 charter school students, parents, teachers and other supporters at the Colorado Charter Schools Rally at the State Capitol on Thursday, April 2. The annual rally brought advocates together to celebrate 15 years since the first charter schools opened in Colorado.  The audience heard from a parent of a charter school student with special needs, principals from KIPP Denver Collegiate High School (opening in 2010), and Omar D. Blair School, and a variety of elected officials including Senate President Peter Groff.

But the highlight of the day was the awards ceremony where winners of the Colorado Charter School Essay Contest were honored by Lt. Governor Barbara O’Brien. The three winners, and three runners up each read their heartfelt essays to the crowd. Over 900 essays were submitted to the Colorado League of Charter Schools for the contest, each well-written, creative and full of heart – making the selection of the winners very difficult for the reviewers.

The League congratulates the essay contest winners and thanks everyone who came out to show support for Colorado’s charter schools. It was a great day for everyone who participated.
