Job Description:

DSST Public Schools (DSST) seeks a Director of Curriculum and Instruction who has a demonstrated track-record of elevating student achievement in urban schools.  


DSST Public Schools Overview:

DSST Public Schools is a network of high performing 6-12 charter schools in Denver, Colorado.  Since its inception in 2004, the Denver School of Science and Technology has boasted the highest performance and growth in Denver Public Schools.  The success of this network has gained attention from both President Obama, when DSST was recognized as one of three finalists in the Commencement Challenge, and by Oprah Winfrey, who awarded DSST one million dollars as one of six top charter networks nationally.

Responsibilities:  DSST seeks candidates who have a demonstrated track record of the following leadership skills and beliefs:

  • Work with teachers to create and refine DSST Middle Grades curriculum documents (assessments, plans, data tracking), which correspond to college readiness standards, core instructional practices, and the benchmark assessment program
  • Oversee teacher implementation of DSST Middle Grades curriculum
  • Observe and evaluate teachers in categories that correspond to DSST instructional expectations (in collaboration with Middle School Director)
  • Create, maintain, and update whole school, grade level, and teacher level student academic and assessment records and reports
  • Maintain an awareness of how course content will prepare a student for the needs of a high school college preparatory program
  • Oversee required standardized testing Identify and arrange for staff development opportunities which relate to core instructional practices, standards based assessments, and content areas.
  • Co-manage Middle School department chairs to ensure effective outcomes within departments
  • Recruit and hire middle school faculty
  • Work with DSST Home Office to create network-wide standards, curriculum, and assessment documents
  • Work with DSST Home Office to create network-wide new teacher professional development; create school-specific new and returning teacher professional development
  • If applicable, teach one course within the school
  • If applicable, act as a student advisor for a group of 12-15 students

Experience Required:  Director Candidates should demonstrate proven academic leadership skills in urban settings with an emphasis on data-driven instruction and demonstrable gains in student achievement.  It is also preferred that the candidate have 3+ years working in classrooms and schools, preferably in urban schools and/or communities.

Description

DSST: Cole will be opening its doors in the summer of 2011 to its first class of sixth grade students. The school will add one grade each year until it is a full 6th - 8th grade middle school.



DSST: Cole Middle School’s program will have a college preparatory focus, with an emphasis on developing core liberal arts skills in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Students will excel in a highly structured classroom environment with clear academic and behavioral expectations. This program and environment prepares students for the rigorous high school program at DSST and ultimately for the challenges of college.
