Charter schools encounter challenges in all areas of facilities, including locating a suitable school building, affording an adequate facility, financing renovations or construction, and managing the facility. These challenges can result in a barrier to the growth and success of the school. The proper preparation and education, however, can prevent facilities challenges from becoming an impediment to the success and longevity of a charter school. The Colorado League of Charter Schools has gathered the following resources to assist you in meeting the facilities challenges associated with starting, operating and managing a charter school.
Charter School Facilities Primer – A useful guide to understanding the overall facilities process and determining how much your school can afford to spend.
2010 National Charter School Facilities Institute – View expert presentations on Assessing Facilities Needs, Facilities Planning, the Pre-Development Phase, Fundraising, Indicators for Quality Loans, and more.
Federal Sources of Facilities Funding – An informative presentation on Federal Funding Programs for Charter School Facilities by Maria C. Sazon, of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools
Charter Schools and the Bond Market – A guide to what institutional investors look for in issuing charter school bonds by AllianceBernstein
National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities – A variety of facilities resources, including webinars.
The Division of Public School Capital Construction Assistance at the Colorado Department of Education – The Division of Public School Capital Construction Assistance at the Colorado Department of Education has developed a series of programs for school districts, traditional public schools, charter schools, BOCES and The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind for capital construction funding and technical assistance.
If you have reviewed the materials above and conducted a self-analysis of your facilities needs and determined you need additional technical assistance, please contact Jessica Johnson (jmjohnson@coloradoleague.org) for further information on the League’s facilities technical support services.
