The Colorado League of Charter Schools is working to support and encourage charter school teacher quality and effectiveness through a new teacher effectiveness initiative. The League offers educator-focused professional development opportunities designed around the use of data to drive instruction, assessment, differentiated instruction, support of English Language Learners, and more. In addition the League advocates for teacher quality, and offers a new Employment Practices Initiative for charter schools.
Teacher Effectiveness is such a hot button issue and is critical to reaching high student performance and closing the achievement gap. The League’s Public Affairs Division works alongside many other organizations to ensure that laws and regulations support the autonomy of charter schools, while simultaneously holding teachers accountable for student achievement.
The League launched a pilot Employment Practices Initiative to provide best-in-class employment and human resource compliance materials and education to a group of Colorado charter schools. In conjunction with employment law attorneys and human resource professionals, the League has developed model policies and procedures that will be available to the participating group of charter schools - and eventually to all of the League’s member schools. The Employment Practices Initiative will create a model employee handbook specifically developed for charter schools, as well as seminars and trainings on employment law and related issues.
The League will also administer a charter school teacher survey to assess the quality of the teachers employment setting and overall job satisfaction. The survey will also measure the impact of the model employment resources on the employment climate at the school.
The League works to improve teacher effectiveness by researching and providing ongoing, proven professional learning opportunities to support and develop charter school teachers. These opportunities are based on proven practice and are universally applicable to all teachers and schools, regardless of the model or instructional focus of the school. In addition, the League is working to provide these trainings and a significantly reduced rate than schools could find on their own. These opportunities provide schools with access to excellent training for educators and serve to network schools together in promoting teacher effectiveness and professional growth. Some of the training topics include:
