League Endorses Greeley Mill Levy Override

    Date: Tuesday October 13,2009

Organization: Colorado League of Charter Schools

The Colorado League of Charter Schools has announced its endorsement of the Greeley/Evans Mill Levy Override – Ballot Issue 3A.

The League’s endorsement of 3A is based on the fact that Greeley/Evans School District will include charter schools in the mill levy override proceeds on a pro-rata, per-pupil basis of approximately $890 should the ballot issue pass.

“Greeley/Evans’ decision to not only include charters in their mill levy override, but to include them on a pro-rata basis is unprecedented,” said Jim Griffin, President of the Colorado League of Charter Schools. “Last year we spent a lot of time at the State Capitol passing legislation that would require school districts to consider charter school needs in bond issues and mill levy overrides. What Greeley/Evans is doing is above and beyond the minimum required by that legislation, and we applaud them for being leaders and treating all of their public school students equally under this ballot issue.”

If 3A is approved by voters, additional funding to Greeley’s charter schools would equate to approximately $900,000/year for Frontier Charter Academy, $900,000/year for University Schools, and $350,000/year to Union Colony Preparatory School.

“Difficult economic times have resulted in many K-12 budget cuts at the state level, which have been felt in Greeley’s public school classrooms,” said Griffin. “This mill levy override would go a long way towards helping all Greeley/Evans public schools offset those cuts by funding items such as textbooks, technology and other instructional/curricular resources to be used by students and teachers. The Colorado League of Charter Schools is proud to endorse 3A, and hopes the residents of Greeley/Evans will also see its value and vote to invest in their public school system through this important mill levy override.”

The Colorado League of Charter Schools is a non-profit, membership organization that represents charter schools in the state. The League is committed to helping these schools reach high levels of student performance and overall success by providing information and resources, including technical support, advocacy, public relations assistance and more.
