Frontier Academy receives boost to aid the Green Roof Legacy
State Farm Youth Advisory Board awards Frontier Academy $92,280 grant for environmental responsibility project

Greeley, Colo., March , 2010 – The State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB) announced that Frontier Academy, located at 6530 W. 16th Street in Greeley, has received a $92,280 service-learning grant for a Green Roof project.

Frontier Academy is one of 82 community organizations from across the United States and Canada to receive a service-learning, youth-led grant. Frontier’s request was selected from more than 1,100 grant requests received by YAB.

“I was thrilled to find out Frontier Academy was selected to receive this grant,” said Greeley State Farm Agent Matt Chafin. “Now that the funds are available to get this important project off the ground, I believe it will positively impact the lives of these students making a difference in the way they view their responsibility in protecting our environment.”

Frontier Academy will be the first school in Colorado to have a Green Roof, and the second in the Nation. Frontier’s Green Roof will be one of just a handful of similar projects in Colorado leading the state in Green technologies.

“I’m so proud of our students and their outstanding efforts in creating this project and securing funds. They did all the work,” shared Teacher Paul Royle-Grimes. “I’m looking forward to getting started knowing that our Green Roof will stand as a model for other schools.”

The school is planning an assembly to introduce the Green Roof project along with a big check presentation on Wednesday, March 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.

"I am also really proud of the students and Mr. Grimes for having an environmental awareness vision for Frontier Academy then writing and receiving the Green Roof grant.  This is an impressive opportunity for our students to be on the cutting edge of environmental awareness and positively impacting their future," said Mary Meersman, Principal of Frontier Academy High School. "State Farm needs to be thanked and commended for offering this opportunity to students, our future environmental leaders."
