School finance set for big makeover By the end of the day Monday, the 2009-10 school finance bill is going to look at lot different than it did when it emerged from the Senate April 3 on a 30-2 vote. Senate Bill 09-256, pushed through the Senate in just four days, was a heavily reform-oriented proposal to funnel more money directly to regular and charter schools with significant percentages of at-risk students (including charter schools), provide a funding formula for charter school facilities, give school districts more flexibility in use of various reserve funds, create a state boarding school for at-risk students and require all 9th graders to register with College in Colorado for advisory services. |

Charter bonds bill neutered to move forward SB 176 was heavily amended on Thursday in order to get it out of the Senate Education Committee. The bill went from being a "shall" bill to a "may" bill. Charters--a viable solution for district woes? The Douglas County School District is in budget mode and rumors about this cut and the other seem to change each week. This week a couple of friends called and asked if the charter schools will participate in budget cuts the same way as the neighborhood schools. The questions were mostly about class size increase and whether the charters would need to increase their class sizes if the rest of the district schools do. The short and incomplete answer is--no. |
