Accelerating Academic Achievement for English Language Learners
Date:
  November 15-16, 2010
Training:  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location:  Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool, 6857 South Spruce Street, Centennial, CO 80112
Cost:  $300.00 for participants from member schools; $400.00 for participants from non-member schools. Grant funds have been used to subsidize the cost of this training, which would normally cost $655.00.
Description:  In order to maximize learning opportunities for K-12 English learners, teachers and administrators must plan effective programs and lessons that not only consider the concepts and skills that students must know and be able to do, but that also address specific sheltered strategies that will help teachers work with students who are learning English while learning in English.

Participants will apply strategies that will lead to active participation and lessons based on the language acquisition levels for their students.  In this highly interactive and hands-on training, teachers walk away with increased understanding, strategies, and motivation to accelerate academic achievement for English learners.

The Accelerating Academic Achievement for English Language Learners seminar focuses on differentiating between ESL/ELD curriculums (what we teach) and sheltered instruction (how we teach).  It will model teaching strategies throughout the training to enable the teacher to experience active participation in a learning situation.  Additionally, it analyzes exactly what constitutes active participation and collaborative learning and how that analysis should inform the selection of instructional strategies that result in immediate, increased achievement for English learners.  The models used are all research-proven strategies, and participants will work to apply these to their own unique teaching situations.

During this interactive seminar, participants will:

  • Clarify by comparing and contrasting ELD and sheltered instruction
  • Understand how to apply sheltered instructional strategies when planning lessons to make content comprehensible for English learners, as well as how to engage all students in active listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension.
  • Learn and apply information on language-acquisition levels, including what students can do and what teachers should do at each stage of second-language acquisition.
  • Examine effective ways to assess and differentiate instruction for English learners.
  • Apply the understanding of sheltered strategies; specifically, tapping prior knowledge and building background knowledge, engaging in active participation, building in processing time, organizing instruction around differentiated instruction, using graphic organizers, cooperative learning and incorporating the five domains of language (listening, speaking, reading, writing and thinking) to language and content instruction.

Common Formative Assessment
Date:  December 9 - 10, 2010
Time:  9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location:  TBD, Denver Metro Area
Cost:  $300.00 for participants from member schools; $400.00 for participants from non-member schools, grant funds have been used to subsidize the cost of this training, which would normally cost $655.00.
Description:  This two-day seminar is based on the book, Common Formative Assessments: How to Connect Standards-based Instruction and Assessment, by Larry Ainsworth and Donald Viegut (Corwin Press, 2006).

Common Formative Assessments are periodic or interim assessments, collaboratively designed by grade-level or course teams of teachers, and administered to all students in a grade level or course several times during the quarter, semester, trimester, or entire school year.  Designed as matching pre- and post-assessments to ensure same-assessment to same-assessment comparisons, they are similar in design and format to district and state assessments.

Common formative assessment items are intentionally aligned to essential (Power) standards only and reflect a blend of item types, including selected-response (multiple choice, true/false, matching) and constructed-response (short- or extended).  Participating teachers analyze student assessment results in Data Teams to plan and differentiate instruction.  Such results provide predictive value as to how students are likely to do on each succeeding assessment (school, district, and state) in time for teachers to make instructional modifications.

Participants will learn about:

  • Regular and timely feedback regarding student attainment of the most critical standards in order to better meet diverse learning needs of all students
  • Multiple-measure assessments that allow students to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of formats
  • Ongoing collaboration opportunities for grade-level, course, and department teachers
  • Consistent expectations within a grade level, course, and department regarding standards, instruction, and assessment priorities
  • Agreed-upon criteria for proficiency to be met within each individual classroom, grade level, school, and district
  • Deliberate alignment of classroom, school, district, and state assessments to better prepare students for success on state assessments
  • Results provide predictive value as to how students are likely to do on each succeeding assessment in time to make instructional modifications
