The League offers a number of professional development training opportunities on a variety of topics throughout the year. Also listed below are trainings offered by other organizations related to assessment, performance management and student information systems commonly used by charter schools.
These trainings are a great opportunity to receive up-to-date information on systems and data, dig deeper into your school’s student performance data, strengthen board governance, and share experiences and collaborate with other schools to strengthen your performance management systems.

Best Practices in Charter School Governance
Cost: $650 half-day | $1000 full-day
Audience: Boards of new or existing charter schools
Description: This training introduces basic roles, responsibilities and general practices essential to creating and/or operating an effective charter school board. This training can be applied to boards of new schools, individual board members, or existing boards needing assistance with structure and operations. The training is customized for each school via a pre-session survey and conference call in order to best meet the needs of the charter school board. This training package can include the review of items such as: committees (work, structure and board oversight), board recruitment, public relations and marketing, measuring constituent satisfaction, evaluating the board and administration, developing essential operating documents, legal roles and responsibilities of board members, running effective meetings, school bylaws (and other foundation documents) and compliance, essential policies as they relate to items such as board meeting/operations protocol, conflict of interest, employment, school operations, accountability, SPED, ESL, and basic contract provisions (especially at the time of charter renewal) and waivers.

On-Site Performance Management Training for Boards
Cost: $600
Audience: The training is customized in advance to best meet each school's individual needs. These trainings are delivered to individual school boards.
Description: This half-day training is available for charter school board members to learn more about their role in monitoring the academic program and results at the school. This is a customized training that will provide boards with tools and resources to assist in the role of appropriate oversight and evaluation. The focus of this session is on understanding student performance data, key questions board members should know how to answer, and how boards can establish sound practices in providing academic performance oversight and monitoring. Other topics typically included are key school performance expectations and measures as well as state and authorizer performance expectations and measures.

Strategic Planning for Charter School Boards
Cost: $650 half-day | $1000 full-day
Audience: Charter school boards in the process of creating a strategic plan
Description: Developing a sound strategic plan is key to supporting effective governance and leadership. Strategic plans range from specific goals such as facilities acquisition to more general purposes such as guiding the school’s strategic priorities and continuous improvement. The League can assist your charter school with items such as strategic planning process design and facilitation, SWOT analyses, transition from founding board to policy setting board, and identifying key performance indicators, measures, metrics and targets.

Cost: $600. This training has been pre-approved by CDE and is automatically funded if included in Start Up and Implementation grants.

Colorado Charter Starter Webinar Series
The Colorado League of Charter Schools announces a free webinar series for new charter school developers. These 90 minute webinars are designed for people who are in the process of developing a charter school application; however, anyone is welcome to attend.

Accelerating Achievement for English Language Learners

Description: In this highly interactive and hands-on training, school leaders and teachers will walk away with increased understanding, strategies, and motivation to accelerate academic achievement for English learners.

Engaging Classroom Assessments

Audience: School Leaders and Teachers
Description: Use “Power” standards to develop meaningful performance assessments.
The two-day seminar focuses on each participant’s effective design, creation, and use of the performance assessments that are the foundation of powerful standards-based instructional and assessment tools. Performance assessments are a powerful teaching and learning tool that make differentiated instruction and assessment possible.
Performance assessments reach all learners including special education, gifted and talented, below grade-level readers, as well as English-language learners. Training contingent upon 15 attendees minimum.

Rigorous Curriculum Design

Audience: School Leaders and Teachers
Description: Explore a thorough model for the development of robust curriculum, fully aligned to state standards, including clear learning outcomes with matching assessments, engaging learning experiences organized into sequenced units of study, and more. Rigorous Curriculum Design is a model for designing or redesigning curriculum so that it truly represents a rigorous 21st century set of comprehensive units of study. This two-day seminar will provide an overview of the entire process so that educators and leaders can, over time, follow the plan to create rigorous curricular units of study. Training contingent upon 15 attendees minimum.

The League is looking for schools willing to host training sessions in Denver, North Metro, Colorado Springs and on the Western Slope. Hosting schools will receive two complimentary reservations to the trainings and can select a date that works best for them. Computer labs are not needed for some of the training sessions and ideally host schools would have space to accommodate 30-40 individuals.
